Doris M. Chapman - August 23, 1944 - April 12, 2022

Departed: 04/12/2022 (Denver)

Obituary Preview: To plant a seed in one’s heart…to root it in love… To nourish it with time spent together…

Yields a blossom that will flourish forever.

Doris Mentora Chapman was born on August 23, 1944, in Oklahoma City Oklahoma to her parents, Roy Franklin and Mayola Smart. She was the second child born to this union. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, DelRoy, and Harold and her sisters, Margie L, Sharon, Paula, and Karla. The family moved to Denver, Colorado when Doris was an infant. She attended Whittier Elementary, Cole Jr. High, and Manual High schools, all in Denver.

As a child, Doris enjoyed participating in the activities with her Brownie Troop, and Girl Scout, Troop 657. In Girl Scouts, Doris would go away to camp. She was frequently selected as the assistant to the Camp Counselor. She was also the Secretary of her Jr. Achievement group, a school sponsored activity that introduced high school youth to the outside business world.

Doris’ first friends were Laura and Jennie. She loved going to her friends, the Martinez’s to eat the delicious burritos. Her life time friends were Lavonne, Janice, Sarah, and Dorothy.

Doris’ mom passed away when Doris was eleven, and because her dad had to work, he had to leave Doris, by now age twelve, in charge of taking care of the younger siblings. This after his brother and sister in law returned to Oklahoma. So much of her childhood was spent taking care of her younger siblings.

Doris spent time helping her siblings with homework, fixing their meals, walking them to school, doing laundry, grocery shopping, and all of the other responsibilities associated with being a mom.

When Doris did get to play with her friends, she had to bring her younger sister, Sherri with her, and while Sherri was happy to go with her big sis, Doris wasn’t happy about it at all. But what could she do? It was either bring Sherri with her or stay home and babysit Sherri.

At Cole Junior High School, Doris won the Posture Queen competition because she had the best posture. In the annual high school sponsored Red Seals Potato Chips sales, Doris won two years straight, and received gift certificates.

Doris really enjoyed going to Whittier School on Friday nights to dance with her friends at the Canteen.

During high school, Doris excelled in math, was on the honor roll, and was a member of the Pep Club. She was also a member of the Latin Club, the Skating Club, Thunderbirds, All School Shows, and Christmas Play. She graduated from Manual High School in 1962.

Doris and Raymond Chapman, her future husband, and love of her life, met at Cole Junior High School. Doris and Ray were married on November 22, 1962, at the home of his parents, Combus and Margaret Chapman, where he grew up, and where the Ray Chapman family resides today. To this union Tonya, Toni, and Troy were born. Doris’ grandchildren are Dayyan, Justin, Tristayne, Tessa, Tylan, Tate, Tru, Tae, and Andre. The grandchildren love calling their grandmother, D-Light.

Doris began her career as a Nurse’s Aide, and enjoyed working with the elderly, adolescents, and Neonatal babies. She then advanced to Unit Secretary, and after 34 years of working she retired as a Staffing Coordinator at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in the Historic Mullen Building.

Doris was a member of New Hope Baptist Church from the age of two. She was also a member of the classes of 1960-1964 Manual High School Reunion Committee.

In Doris’ free time, she enjoyed shopping, traveling, going out to eat Mexican food, hamburgers with onions, German Chocolate Cake, Lemon Meringue Pie, and she loved drinking Pepsi. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful woman. To know Doris was to love her.

Doris’ parents, Roy and Mayola Franklin, and baby sister, Royce May, proceeded her in death.

Doris M. Chapman quietly passed away in home on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her loving and devoted husband, Raymond E. Chapman; her children, Tonya L. Chapman, Toni R. Chapman, and Troy D. (LaRael) Chapman; siblings, Delroy Franklin, Harold R. Franklin, Margie L. (Charles) Finely, Sharon E. Patterson, Paula D. Givens, Karla D. Hodges; 9 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and many friends.

Margurite Baker - January 26, 1946 - April 12, 2022

Departed: 04/12/2022 (Denver)

Obituary Preview: Margurite Baker was born on January 26th, 1946, in Denver, Colorado to Tom and Corean Adams. She was sixth child born and grew up with her brothers John Quincy and Thomas, and sisters, Norma Jean, Mayrean, Helen, and Jane. As a young woman, Margurite loved to go out with friends but the only way she was allowed to do so was if she took her sisters with her, which she absolutely hated, especially when her brother Sonny would thump her on her head, and she’d have a big ol’ knot on her forehead!

Margurite matriculated through Denver Public Schools graduating from Manual High School in 1962. After graduating, Margurite married Floyd Underwood and they were blessed with the birth of two beautiful daughters, Tracey and Valerie. The union between Margurite and Floyd later dissolved, and they parted ways. In 1970, she married Charles Baker. To this union two beloved children were born. Parrish, and Charles. Margurite was also blessed with the birth of her son Joseph which completed Margurite’s world.

Reminiscing of special times with their mother, Tracey recalls the enjoyment of cooking with her mom. She learned everything she knows from her. Valerie admired her mom for being a great confidant. She could tell her anything and not be judged. Joseph recalls going out to dinner and the conversations they shared. When they were children, Parrish recalls, that Margurite would always say things like, “grown folks are talking, so take yourself back outside and play!” and “I brought you in this world and I can take you out!” or “in or out, either you stay in, or you stay out!” They loved and respected their mom to the utmost.

Margurite was a faithful lifelong member of St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church and worked with pride and excellence at the University of Colorado Hospital as a Data Entry Specialist. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bingo and cards, talking on the phone, watching her “soaps”, and bowling. Her best friends, Carol Calhoun, Cynthia Hall, Wanda Wade, Pauline Hodges and Delois Ealy and co-workers, Jackie and BJ, will remember their life changing conversations, great advice, being told “I love you” and it be genuine, her wisdom, and her loyalty. Margurite’s friendships lasted many years, sometimes more than 50 years. She always had her friends’ backs and she never stayed mad at them when they disagreed. She will be truly missed.

Margurite is preceded in death by parents, John and Corean Adams; her husband Floyd Underwood; son, Charles Franklin Baker; brothers, John Quincy Adams and Thomas Adams; sisters, Norma Jean Adams and Mayrean Haley.

Margurite Baker departed this life on April 12th, 2022 to the embrace of her Heavenly Father. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Tracey Pryor and Valerie Underwood; sons, Parrish (Valerie K.) Baker and Joseph Lamar Green; son in-law, Sylvester Hoskins; sisters, Helen Ingram and Jane Brice; aunt Pearlene Mickens; grandchildren, Martiqua Pryor, Nathan Pryor, II, Reva Hoskins, Kaley Baker, Tyler Baker, Little Joey Green; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Pryor, Nathan Pryor, III, Khamya Pryor, and Keith co*ckrell, Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In Honor of Margurite, a Celebration of Life will be held, Saturday, April 23, 2022, 2PM at Pipkin Braswell Chapel of Peace (6601 East Colfax Avenue, Denver, CO 80220). Reception to follow immediately after Celebration of Life.

Thomas E. Robinson - December 15, 1945 - April 04, 2022

Departed: 04/04/2022 (Denver)

Obituary Preview: Thomas Edward Robinson, husband, father, grand-father, teacher, coach, athletics commissioner, sports official, and stalwart supporter of education and the arts, has passed on April 4, 2022 at the age of 76 with his family at his side.

Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Tom was a student at Sacred Heart and Regis Jesuit High School. As a student at Regis he studied Latin, was named to the football All-State team, and was Prom King in 1964 (with his Prom Queen, Cleo Parker, who later became his wife in 1970). A 1969 graduate of Colorado State University (CSU), Tom was an All American running back and corner back which earned him the nickname “The Bomb”. He also ran track and played basketball, while earning his degree in mathematics. He subsequently became a recruiter for the CSU football team, and later a Board member. He earned his master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Denver in 1982. After his graduation from CSU, Tom tried out for the NFL San Francisco 49ers, but a devastating injury brought him back to Denver where he married Cleo Jo Ann Parker (with whom he co-founded Cleo Parker Robinson Dance in 1970) and began his distinguished 31-year teaching and coaching career with Regis Jesuit High School.

At Regis, Tom taught all levels of mathematics, including AP Calculus. He was assistant coach in football, basketball, and track (1969-83). the varsity basketball coach for 10 years (1983-93), and varsity golf coach (1993-95). Named as a Regis Teacher of the Year, Tom created the Regis Diversity program, served on the Board of Directors, and has a scholarship in his name that has received over $500,000.00 in funding. Many of Denver's most iconic members of the civic, corporate, and non-profit communities remember his firm but patiently guiding hand in the classroom and on the field, and the impact he had on shaping their futures. Years after leaving school, many of them still affectionally referred to him as "Coach". Following his years at Regis, Tom became the Associate Commissioner for CHSAA (Colorado High School Activities Association). His primary responsibilities for the CHSAA office included overseeing the golf program and officials, but he was also pivotal in developing a sporting behavior program that has earned recognition from member schools based on the premise that fans should "Cheer for Your Team and Not Against Your Opponents."

This was an attitude that Tom conveyed in all aspects of his life, encouraging an aspiration to excellence over the quest for personal fame. The recipient of myriad accolades and awards, he remained quietly humble and focused on the support and advancement of others.

He was named the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame's Outstanding College Official, receiving the Award in 2008. He has also been awarded the John Adams Officiating Award, sponsored jointly by the CHSAA, Mountain West and Western Athletic Conferences. His most recent honor was the 2020 Lloyd Gaskill Award from the Colorado High School Coaches Association for his outstanding efforts in support of Colorado high school athletics.

From 1975-2000, he was a collegiate football official for the western Athletic and Mountain West conferences, and subsequently served as replay official in the CFO West, which serves both the Big 8 and Big 12, Mountain West and Southland conferences. He worked the Bluebonnet, Fiesta, Rose, Cotton, Gator, Independence, and Citrus Bowls. Prior to that he was a high school football official from 1969 to 1975. He was given the Outstanding Service Award from the MWC upon his retirement from on-field coaching.

He subsequently moved into a position as a collegiate instant replay official, which led to his being awarded the officiating duties for the 2017 NCAA title game between Clemson and Alabama.

He and his wife, Cleo Parker Robinson, shared 51 years of marriage, with Tom as a stalwart behind-the-scenes pillar of Cleo's own dream - the creation of what was to become an icon of dance in America - Cleo Parker Robinson Dance (CPRD). Tom was a co-founder, served on the Board of Directors, and was business manager for the organization for many years, addressing every aspect of a non-profit arts entity. He worked diligently to ensure a permanent home in the historic Shorter AME Building (at the corner of 20th and Washington in Denver’s Five Points community) for the company and a strong financial foundation. Every concert, every tour, his steadying hand and calm presence were always evident. For 51 years, artists, staff, technicians, and audiences always knew they'd see Tom in the theatre whenever his own extensive schedule allowed.

Cleo and Tom's son, Malik Robinson, Executive Director of CPRD, is nationally recognized as a leader in the arts, having served as Board Chair of Dance USA, a Bonfils Stanton Fellow, Board Member of the International Association of Blacks In Dance (IABD), husband of Olga Vianey Gonzalez, and father to Cleo and Tom’s grand-children, Ximalma, Xareni, and Nezahualcoyotl. Also an extraordinary athlete, Malik is a graduate of Regis Jesuit High School, where he studied mathematics and was coached by his father.

Messages of remembrance have been pouring in from all over the country - from the worlds of both athletics and the arts, all with one recurring theme - the kindness, patience, and strength of Tom Robinson, and the indelible impact he leaves behind. Those wishing to express their support of the family are asked to send their condolences to Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, 119 Park Avenue West, Denver, Co. 80205 or to info@cleoparkerdance.org

Whenever you couldn’t find KeyRon, all you had to do was look in his favorite hiding place, under his grandmother’s kitchen table with his hands and cheeks full of food. The mighty hog grain strikes again!!! KeyRon had a great sense of humor and he loved playing jokes on people. As a child, he was involved in church and Rec Center plays. He later maintained his position as a forklift/driver operator for many years. KeyRon became a father at the age 19 and he embraced his role of fatherhood with pride, compassion, and elegance. His beautiful baby girl, Za’Naeveonna Lewis was his entire world, he loved her more than anything. KeyRon was engaged to his childhood sweetheart, Le’Che Reeves and he was blessed to inherit three bonus children, Rakiye, Zy’Kari, and Khamani who he loved as if they were his own flesh and blood. Throughout KeyRon and LeChe’s childhood and young adulthood, they shared many first-time experiences. Le’Che remembers the first time KeyRon flew on an airplane. He had a tough exterior but as soon as the plane hit some turbulence, all that “toughness” flew out the window and prayers started going up. Then he had the nerve to act as if nothing had happened once, they stepped off the plane. He said, “It wasn’t even that bad.” His friends, Cody Seagraves, Tim Shackelford, and Daveon Young will always remember how loyal he was. He was always there for them, day or night. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. “Wipe Me Down”

KeyRon Shamar Lewis embraced his Heavenly Father on March 30th, 2022. Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, LaRonda Jones; fiancé, Le’Che Reeves; daughter, Za’Naevonna Lewis; brothers, Kiawa Lewis, Kilyn Lewis, Keyair Lewis, Jonathon Grundy, and Lazareus Lewis; sisters, Kieshia Lewis, LaRonda Grundy, and LaKyla Grundy; grandmothers, Curlie Correa and Sherdina Lewis; 3 bonus children, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends.
