Drawing: Form and Movement

Henry Finkelstein

Mondays
12:30pm - 3:30pm

To draw is to express yourself in a special visual language. Learn how the language enables you to render on a at page the spaces and volumes that you observe around you. As we work from the live model and other subjects, we consult historical examples to see how artists have used shape, plane, and rhythm. Awaken yourself to the sensation of seeing a whole page develop at once. Discover the pleasure of making your drawing move, and express yourself in this particular visual language.

Constructing the Figure

Jenny Carolin

Tuesdays
1pm - 4pm

Learn to construct solid and anatomically correct figure and portrait drawings. Through lectures, demonstrations, and individual instruction, this course will cover the anatomical, structural, and surface forms of the head and figure. With a focus on the gesture as our starting point, we will identify the line of the body and develop the constitution of the figure through sequentially longer poses. There will be an emphasis on proportion, perspective, line quality, and light on form. During the second half of the course, we will explore the muscular and skeletal structure of the human figure and how the artist can use anatomy in figure drawing. Drawing is the foundation of many forms of visual expression, and by concentrating on the foundational principles of drawing the figure, students will expand their knowledge through direct observation of the live model. Open to all levels.

Figure Drawing: A Foundation
Yuka Imata

Wednesdays, 7pm - 10pm

Working from the live model, learn to draw the structural landmarks of the human figure by combining the variations of form and plane. We will begin by simplifying light and shadow to create shapes with a step-by-step approach, which will then allow you to build the detail of the body and achieve a likeness with human expression. You will learn to create a three dimensional effect with depth of space by understanding and controlling your edges. All levels are welcome.

Mixed Media Works on Paper

Michele Liebler

Tuesdays
1pm - 4pm

Experiment with a variety of mediums in combination with various type of surfaces. Students can use Graphite, Gouache, Watercolor, Oil paint and Colored Pencils in this class. The surface directly influences mark making whether your style is traditional or contemporary. Many different artists used mixed media such as Degas, Romare Bearden, Jasper John, Jim Dine and Rauschenberg just to name a few. The combinations are endless, but the basic idea is to combine and layer materials to create unique works. Students will be encouraged to work from their choice of subjects such as still life, figure, designs and their own sketches. The point of this class is for students to discover their own visual language. Beginners to advance students are welcomed.

Advanced Drawing

Peter Bonner

This course will now run for the entire 8 weeks of each session.

Fridays, 1pm - 4pm
Session Start Dates: October 18, December 13, February 28, and May 1, 2020

The class has the objective of providing an opportunity to study in-depth one particular issue through drawing, and this class will be focusing on structure. It will take place each Friday afternoon from 1-4pm starting the fifth week of the session. At each class we will be exploring this issue a number of ways, including examining the works of masters to see various ways that they use structure, discussing as a group the consequences of this for each of us, and drawing from the model so that we can put our thinking into practice with the goal of taking the first steps towards making the ideas our own. The instructor will give demonstrations where ever possible.
