The second consecutive day of the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys took place at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live on Sunday, where awards were handed out in variety, nonfiction and reality programming categories.

Welcome to Wrexham collected five Emmys, for unstructured reality series, directing, cinematography, picture editing and sound mixing.

Oscar-shortlisted documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie won four Emmys for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special, directing, editing and music composition. Accepting the award for outstanding doc, the team saluted Fox, saying he “took Parkinson’s out of the shadows. He created a thriving community, and he built the most respected foundation in the world.”

Saturday Night Live won awards for directing and production design, taking the long running series’ total number of Emmys to 89. The production design team dedicated its award to “guiding light” Eugene Lee, who had been a production designer on the series since its 1975 premiere until he died at age 83 in early 2023.

Additional multiple Emmy recipients included Dancing With The Stars, for choreography, lighting design and technical director/camerawork; The Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show Starring Rihanna, for directing and choreography; Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, for sound mixing and technical direction/camerawork; and Moonage Daydream, for sound editing and mixing.

RuPaul extended his record with his 13th Emmy and 9th consecutive win in the category of outstanding host for RuPaul’s Drag Race. The series also collected an Emmy for picture editing.

Barack Obama won his second consecutive Emmy for narration. He was honored this year for Netflix doc Working: What We Do All Day and, a year ago, for Netflix doc Our Great National Parks. The former president wasn’t in attendance.

Maya Rudolph won her fifth Emmy, this season for character voice-over performance in the series Big Mouth.

Meanwhile Keke Palmer collected an Emmy for outstanding game show host for Password, making her the first woman to win this award in 15 years. Jeopardy! won the category for outstanding game show. This is the first year the game show categories were presented as part of the Primetime Emmys as opposed to the Daytime Emmys.

With the wins for Moonage Daydream, sound editors John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone and rerecording mixer Paul Massey are all now halfway to an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). The trio previously won Oscars for Bohemian Rhapsody.

A Black Lady Sketch Show won the Emmy in picture editing in variety programming for the third consecutive year. Backstage, editor Stephanie Filo saluted series creator Robin Thede for championing women and women of color “in front and behind the camera.”

Sunday’s winners included Succession: Controlling the Narrative, for short-form nonfiction or reality series; The 1619 Project, for documentary or nonfiction series, marking the first win for Disney’s Onyx Collective content brand dedicated to the work of creators of color and underrepresented creatives; Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, for hosted nonfiction series or special; The Territory, exceptional merit in documentary filmmaking; and The Simpsons, for outstanding animated program—the long running series’ 37th Emmy.

Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love won the night’s final award, for variety special, which the TV icon accepted with a brief, emotional speech that concluded with a message of gratitude to NBC and a plea for everyone to drive home safely. Throughout the night, presenters and winners singled out Burnett for the inspiration she has provided to creatives in the entertainment industry for decades.

On Saturday, HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us won a leading eight awards while The White Lotus, The Bear and Wednesday collected four awards apiece.

Sunday night’s ceremony took place at the same time as the Golden Globes as the entire 2023 Emmy Awards trophyfest —including the televised Emmys on Monday, Jan. 15 —were delayed until 2024 due to the writers and actors strikes last year. Emmys judging remained on its original schedule; voting closed last summer.

HBO’s Succession entered the weekend with 27 nominations, the most for a series, followed by HBO’s The Last of Us (24) and The White Lotus (23) and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso (21).

Previously announced winners in juried categories including animation, costume, hair styling, make-up and motion design were also presented this weekend.

A complete list of the winners from Sunday night’s show follow.
