Spring is such a fun season — it’s getting warmer, flowers and trees are starting to bloom, and summer is just around the corner.
And now that many kids are having to adjust to working from home, it’s the perfect time to spruce up your home classroom with some fun seasonal decorations.
Here are some creative and educational ideas for spring classroom door decorations, all of which can be done with things you’ve already got at home (or are easy to buy online).
Paper florals
Flowers are quintessentially spring, and it’s so easy to make colorful floral decorations from nothing but paper or card.
If you have them on hand, paper plates make excellent flower petals. And if you have paint supplies, let your kids paint their own flowers or decorations, like butterflies.
To make decorating your door an educational activity, task your kids with recreating their three favorite flowers — naming them, and telling you where they’re typically grown, as they go. You can even combine this creative activity with some worksheets about flower types and facts.
Handprint flowers
What kid doesn’t relish the chance to stick their hands in paint?
For little ones, encourage them to make a flower or bird and butterfly wings from their whole handprint. For older kids, they can use each finger to print a petal, going around in a circle until the flower is complete — a great way to develop their motor skills.
Print letters to make a slogan like “never stop growing” or ask your kids to come up with their own spring-related mantra that they can write in their best handwriting.
Butterflies
If you have access to a range of colored card, a rainbow butterfly wall is a great way to add brightness to any room. Print a butterfly outline to use as a stencil; you’ll probably want about 8-10 butterflies for each color. If your kids are old enough to use scissors, they can help you cut them out as their creative —but focused — activity for the day. For artistic students, ask them to decorate the plain card to something more special.
This display looks especially nice hanging near a window, where it can catch the sunlight; a nice reminder that, soon enough, we’ll be able to go outside and enjoy the warmer weather!
Round your session off with a butterfly facts worksheets — did you know that there are 28,000 species of butterflies in the world? — or even some quiet time for butterfly wing coloring in.
Suncatchers
If your “classroom” door has a pane of glass in the middle, why not make a suncatcher that can hang there and brighten the room?
These are super easy to make and a great toddler-friendly craft. All you need is cupcake cases and some colored tissue paper. Thin paper works just as effectively and you can add other decorations like beads, sequins, or even pasta.
Base your design around spring flowers, animals, or any other uplifting image! Whatever you choose, engage your child in a conversation about what it is, where it comes from, and some fun facts for them to remember.
Hungry caterpillar
Spring is the perfect time to read (or re-read) The Very Hungry Caterpillar with your kids. As the weather gets warmer, you’re a lot more likely to see bugs and crawlies in your backyard or neighborhood.
Embrace this by teaching your children about caterpillars and other bugs, and decorating your classroom door with a hungry caterpillar of your own. Use green plastic plates, painted paper plates or green card cut into circles — you could even use green balloons if you have them lying around!
Clouds and rain
With April comes April showers. This is a funny and cute way to celebrate the rain without getting wet! Sure, it does take a little work, but it looks amazing if you can pull it off.
There are a couple of ways you can make the cloud, depending on what supplies you have on hand. For a super fluffy, realistic-looking cloud, try using polyester stuffing. You can fluff it into a cloud shape (or just mold it around a paper lantern), then hang it from your ceiling with fishing line.
An easier option is to use white balloons, which you can arrange in a cloud formation. Then cut out blue water droplets and hang them from the cloud with string or fishing line.

Birds
Now that it’s spring, birds are out and chirping every morning. Pay them tribute with this classroom door idea, which looks complex but is actually really easy to replicate.
Brown craft paper can be twisted to look like a tree’s branches — or you could even use butcher’s paper or packing paper. Cut out leaves from green card and then either draw your own birds or print off some colorful cartoons.
Bonus points for including types of bird found in your local area, and teaching your child about their migration patterns.
Chain link rainbow
Another way to bring a bright splash of color to your classroom, these rainbow chain link decorations are super versatile. You can arrange them in an arc on your door, hang them from the ceiling, or string them along the walls.
Links are easy enough that even young kids can make them — all you need is strips of colored card or paper, and glue. Depending on your child’s age, try our Colors worksheet pack. You can simply ask them to name each color as you go. Or you can teach them a thing or two about primary colors — that red mixed with yellow makes orange, and blue mixed with yellow makes green — and how the human eye sees color.
Bees
Bees are really fascinating creatures — did you know they can be found on every continent other than Antarctica?
Your little one will love learning all about bees, and hives, and honey while making your very own bee-inspired door decoration. If you’re not so artistically inclined, there are plenty of free printables you can find online — use them as a template or just print them off in color and stick them to your door. Easy!
